World Triathlon Corporation has inked a multi-year agreement with former Ironman champion Greg Welch retaining his services as a technical advisor for the company.   In his role, Welch will work closely with newly appointed event manager Tom Cooney to upgrade the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.  Additionally, Welch will spearhead efforts to standardize the entire Ironman series worldwide.

"When I was asked to come on board with the WTC organization I was taken back," said Welch. "To work for WTC fulfills a lifelong dream of mine, as my passion and commitment for the world's greatest race still burns as strong now as it did when I was competing."

According to WTC president Lew Friedland, the company chose Welch because of his extensive race experience, overall expertise and because he is held in such high regard by the triathlon community.

"Greg has always been someone we've turned to when we've had technical questions, or athlete-related issues.  He has done more than 400 triathlons during the course of his career and has seen the full spectrum of events," said Friedland.  "Greg has remarkable insight and is very astute with regard to all facets of the event.  He is exactly what we need to help raise the caliber of all of our events worldwide."

Welch said when he was first approached about the position he had to think about how expansive the job would be and how he could build on what he thought was a great race in Hawaii.  After some thought, he was intrigued by WTC's commitment to improve the event and the series, so he was anxious to be a part of the process.

"To win the race of my dreams was surely the best memory, but now to work on the race is surely the greatest job I could have," said Welch. "I bring the passion and desire to drive this event to an even greater level."

Best-known for a career as dynamic as his personality, Welch captured the Ironman Triathlon World Championship title in 1994.  He is the only man to win triathlon's "Grand Slam" - the ITU Short Distance Triathlon ('90), the World Duathlon Championship ('93), the Ironman Triathlon World Championship ('94), and the ITU Long Distance Triathlon ('96).  Welch also serves on the athlete committee of the International Triathlon Union.

In addition to his behind-the-scenes role with WTC, Welch will continue to serve as the

on-camera expert for the WTC-produced ESPN2 races and serve as the host of the www.ironmanlive.com cybercasts.
